Stop Worrying, Start Trusting

By Dr. T. V. Oommen

Worry, A Universal Problem

Worry appeared early in mankind’s history. The book of Genesis in the Bible gives some clues to when and how worry came into existence. When man was created he was free from any worries and cares, for God had provided everything he needed. He was placed in a perfect environment –– the Garden of Eden. He had enough to eat, and there was interesting work to do besides enjoying the fellowship with all creation and the Creator. If he had any questions, God was there to answer. He had no health problems, no fear of wild animals (they were not wild at that time), no fear of the unknown. All that changed when he sinned against God. He lost his innocence and immunity. He came under the influence of death and decay. Left alone, fear started gripping him because of insecurity and uncertainty.

Yes, fear from insecurity and uncertainty is the basis of worry. The future looks uncertain because there is no guarantee that things will work out well. Insecurity surrounds us because things beyond our control are operating in the world which can affect us adversely. Death and disease are not just possibilities but realities.

The Root Cause: Loss of Trust in God

When man sinned against God, he started fearing God and distrusting Him. This distrust is the basis of all fear and worry. Without God man feels helpless. Modern man may think he has conquered nature and diseases to a great extent, but the truth is, there is much that remains unconquered. New problems and new diseases appear as old ones are under control. So modern man with all his achievements is just as vulnerable as ancient man. He has as much worry as his ancestors, though it could be of a different nature.

Is Prayer The Answer?

‘Stop worrying, start praying!’ is given as a recipe to end worry. But I think this is not as effective as it appears. Don’t we all pray for our needs every day, and don’t we cry before God in times of trouble? The truth is, even when we pray we are under worry. That is why we not only repeat our praying, but ask others to pray for us. We fear our prayers may not be heard. So we go to our preacher, priest, prayer group leader and so on, for their prayers. Not satisfied with that, some go to places of pilgrimage to visit a saint who is revered after his or her death. Alas, most people return from such places with no answer.

Trusting God: Is It Easy?

When it comes to trusting God, we find it is not easy. Why? Trust, to most people, is like going blindfolded hoping we will not fall. How many are prepared for that? When crisis situations come, trusting means we remain calm and self-assured. Is it possible to remain calm and confident when we are facing terminal illness, bankruptcy, starvation, natural disasters, attack at gunpoint, and so on? Most of us would admit we cannot stay calm under such circumstances. We are not sure of the outcome, and we fear the worst.

What Trust Involves

Trust in God is not a blind act. It is not a leap in the dark. Trust is dependence with utter certainty. Trust is taking your dad at his word when he promised you something when you approached him as a child. Trust is believing your doctor that the operation is going to be safe. Trust is based on evidence! We do not trust anyone unless we have some proof of that person’s trustworthiness. That proof may come from other people’s testimony or our own limited experience.

God challenges us to trust in Him, and He is prepared to provide the proof! He has already provided proof in the pages of the Bible; and He is prepared to provide additional proof of His trustworthiness in your own life.

There is only one way to get that personal proof you may need: trust God the next time you face uncertainty! There is only one way to make sure the car you just bought will take you where you want to go: just start driving! Sitting in the car idle for any length of time would not give you the proof.

Does trusting God involve risk? The fact is it does. God may not give you the answer you thought He would give. Trust involves not only dependence and faith in God’s willingness and ability, but also the acceptance of God’s sovereignty. In His sovereign judgment He may sometimes answer you in a different way, and you have to accept that with gladness. When you trust God you commit yourself completely to His will. So trust and commitment go together. Trusting God gives Him the opportunity to work out the best for you.

Biblical Heroes Who Trusted God

Noah, the hero of the Flood, is perhaps the outstanding example of trust in God. He not only believed what God had told him, but acted upon it. Because of his trust, he and his family inherited the earth after the Flood. We are all descended from Noah!

Abraham trusted God when he was told to go to a land away from his home which he shall possess. It took a lot of courage to set out on a long journey leaving the familiar surroundings for the unknown. If he had not done that, he and his descendents would have missed the Promised Land.

David’s Psalms often contain his affirmation, “In Thee have I trusted....” In the face of opposition and intrigue, it was his trust in God that led him to victory.

Daniel’s friends trusted God when they faced the fiery ordeal of being cast into the furnace ordered by king Nebuchadnezzar. They refused to bow down and worship the king, but chose the ordeal. They believed that their God could rescue them from the furnace; but they added that even if their God did not rescue them they would continue to trust in Him. God honored their trust and chose to rescue them. Paul declared his trust in Christ who kept him going on his mission trips in spite of all the persecution he faced. As Christians we can learn much from Paul.

Christians Never Need To Worry

When I was growing up as a Christian, one New Testament passage that really got my attention was where Jesus told His disciples not to worry about tomorrow. He assured them that the Father knows what His children need, and when we seek His Kingdom and His righteousness, all those needs will be taken care of. He said it is the Gentiles that keep worrying about tomorrow (because they do not know God the Father, and do not trust Him). Yet, when I looked at the Christians around me, even those advanced believers, I found they often displayed fear and anxiety when faced with uncertainty.

I have tried not to worry in crisis situations. Over the years I have faced unemployment, sickness in the family, possibility for failure from all the projects under my responsibility, and so on. There are so many things out of my control that can cause failure or poor performance. Yet I have refused to worry in those circumstances. God took care of each situation.

Summary

Worry is something that we have inherited from our fallen nature and our alienation from God. Fear of the unknown is behind all worry. God’s children have no need to worry. Trusting God is the remedy to all worry and anxiety. Trusting involves complete dependence on God and the acceptance of whatever God wants to do in our life. Trust has to be learned and practiced. The more you trust, the stronger you become. Only by trust can you be calm and confident all the time.

So stop worrying and start trusting!

Bible Discoveries Museum and Teaching Center
Bible Discoveries Museum In a feature article on Dr. Oommen and his museum in The News & Observer newspaper in Raleigh (4/22/10), Yonat Shimron wrote, “Abraham was 75 years old when God told him to leave his country and ‘go to the land I will show you.’ T.V. Oommen heard a call when he turned 75, too. In this case, it was to build a museum in his West Raleigh backyard. Six months later, the Bible Discoveries Museum opened at a special ceremony Saturday. The 400-squarefoot room with two stained-glass windows is a testament to Oommen’s lifelong zeal for understanding biblical history and documenting its many stories.”

Rev. Bill Rudge had the privilege of giving the message and dedicating Dr. T. V. Oommen’s new Bible Discoveries Museum and Teaching Center in Raleigh, NC on April 24, 2010. It was a wonderful ceremony and program as the Lord blessed in many ways.

Bill Rudge and Dr. T.V. Oommen

Dr. T.V. Oommen, Founder of the Museum makes the following remarks: The dedication ceremony of the museum was conducted at my request by my friend Rev. Bill Rudge. We were neighbors in Hermitage, Pa. separated by just a few houses on the same street Bill Rudge had his ministry center adjacent to his home. It was my privilege to be on the Board of Reference of BRM for many years. We support his ministry and Bill has published several of my articles in his newsletter. After my family moved to Raleigh, we continued our friendship and sharing of ideas.

 Bill Rudge and Dr. Oommen

Bill’s message after the dedication was on his life and ministry, how God had changed him as a teenager from his reckless life to a life dedicated to Jesus Christ. He and his wife Karen have ministered to many thousands of spiritually hungry people worldwide over the past thirty years. Bill’s talk made reference to me as a Man of Science, as well as a Man of God, which he followed up by presenting me a plaque with these words. He saw in me a man who was fearless in defending the Bible against attackers such as the evolutionists, a person who had answers on the Bible and science. To me Bill was the most appropriate person I could have chosen for the dedication ceremony. His message blessed all those who were present.

About the Museum

The museum is one of a kind in content and emphasis; it is also a learning center. The most critical events described in the Bible come to life as one inspects the displays starting with the Great Flood and Noah’s Ark, progressing through major Old and New Testament events such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Exodus and Mt. Sinai, the building of the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, and the burial and resurrection of our Lord. A visit to the museum should convince doubters of the existence of these ancient places and events described in the Bible. Other displays include copies of ancient manuscripts of the Bible, pre-King James English Bibles and foreign Bibles. For those who are interested in seeing genuine Bible coins, a collection that includes the widow’s mite, Pontius Pilate lepton (the ‘Shroud coin’), shekel, and tetradrachm (‘Judas coin’), should be of interest. Samples of the real ash and sulfur from Gomorrah (2000 BC), ancient cedar wood from King Solomon’s time (1000 BC), and genuine oil lamps of the first century. Also of interest should be modern cotton from the ancient land of Abraham (Ur), shofar (ram’s horn), samples of myrrh and frankincense, two of the gifts of the Magi, the stem of a real ‘crown of thorns’ plant, and other items.

The idea of building the museum came rather suddenly, after I crossed my 75th birthday at the end of August 2009. The biblical patriarch Abraham was 75 when God called him from a life of oblivion to go to the Promised Land. In my case I had achieved my goals in my career and had retired, but was keeping active with world travel, especially in Bible lands.

It occurred to me building the museum was the next logical thing to do so that people could see for themselves what I wrote about. The museum is my offering to God. It is a one room museum 16 ‘ x 25’. The 16’ width is close to the ten cubits width of the Tabernacle Holy Place. I point out to the visitors the red curtain in the back wall. In the Tabernacle what was beyond it was the Most Holy Place in which was the holy Ark of the Covenant. To surprise my visitors I open the curtain, and there is a large gold-colored painting of the Ark of the Covenant! Later on I tell my visitors that God masterminded the Crucifixion event in such a way that when Jesus died on the Cross His blood dripped through a crack in the bedrock underneath and reached the Ark which had been secretly kept there for nearly 2,600 years after it was removed from Solomon’s Temple during the Babylonian invasion of Jerusalem and the destruction of Solomon’s Temple. You can read more about it on my web site article on the Ark of the Covenant (www.biblediscoveries.com).

 Dr. T.V. Oommen and Wife

I hope and pray the museum will be a blessing to many people. The museum is located at 4808 Kaplan Dr., Raleigh, NC 27606.

Ministry Trips

Country Club of North Carolina

Bill and Karen recently had a great time of ministry in North and South Carolina. They were hosted in Pinehurst, NC by BRM Board member Bill Wardle (former Mayor of Mercer, Pennsylvania) and his wife Betty. While in Pinehurst, Bill had the exciting opportunity to speak to a group of amazing men at the famous Country Club of North Carolina. The response to Bill’s message was excellent and we are grateful for the wonderful comments and notes.

Mizpah Baptist Church

At Mizpah Baptist Church in Camden, SC, Karen ministered in song and BIll spoke at the Sunday morning service on the topic, How Long Can America Stand? The response was fantastic and it was a blessing to be with Pastor Will Cline who served on the BRM Board of Advisors when he served as pastor at Orangeville Baptist Church in Orangeville, Pa. Pastor Cline has been a good friend of Bill and Karen’s for many years. This is the second time Bill and Karen have been blessed to minister at Mizpah Baptist Church, a church that has been a faithful prayer and financial supporter for the past couple years.

Fort Bragg ...

After visiting a Special Forces museum at Fort Bragg, Bill and Karen were blessed to stay overnight in York, SC with Rich and Sunday Miller. Rich produced a video of Bill’s “Letter to the Church in America” which is posted on our website, YouTube, and other sites. It is a powerful and challenging message to all the churches of America.

While in York Bill also met with Terry Sartain, pastor of a Calvary Chapel church, to discuss future plans for Bill to minister at his church in Charlotte. Terry was significant in Bill’s recent appointment as a chaplain with the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team.

Billy Graham Headquarters

Before flying from Charlotte to Pittsburgh, Bill and Karen were blessed to tour the Billy Graham Library and then have lunch and receive an inspiring tour of the Billy Graham headquarters by Brett Sartain who Bill and Karen became friends with out in California. Brett is now on staff at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, which is headquartered in Charlotte.

So many more exciting things happened during our ministry trips in North and South Carolina. Also, the response to Bill and BJ’s messages at various local churches in Pennsylvania and Ohio has been fantastic. We count it a privilege to minister at such a variety of churches and to have the prayers and support of such faithful brothers and sisters in Christ.

Rudge Ministries Touching Lives of Prisoners in South Carolina

The Columbia International University Prison Initiative requested us to donate 250 of Bill’s Reaching Your Maximum Potential in Christ books for their prison ministry in South Carolina. The response as so good they just requested an additional shipment.

Dear Karen,

The ministry from cell to cell continues. Bill’s book Reaching Your Maximum Potential proved to be very useful and a great tool. We are out of the supply that you sent. Would you be willing to send another supply? Four books stand out to me as valuable in our ministry: Overcoming the Giants in Your Life, Reaching Your Maximum Potential, Spiritual Warfare and Victory, and Who is This Jesus? Would 50 copies of each book be a reasonable request? Perhaps Bill travels this way in your ministry. Please let me know when you head toward Columbia and I will alert the warden. I would love to show our program in action – and Bill could speak to our men during our chapel times.

The Master’s Men’s Conference Was a Great Success

Response to BJ’s, Jim’s, and Bill’s messages was excellent.

Pastor Jim Weikal of the Sharon Alliance Church who sponsored the men’s conference gives the following report.

I received numerous positive comments such as: “The speakers were awesome. Very well put together. Learned a lot. I could feel the Holy Spirit’s presence.” These are just a few of the many written responses from the first ever Master’s Men’s Conference sponsored by Sharon Alliance Church in Sharon, PA. Over 50 men from as far away as Cincinnati, Ohio came to be uplifted and encouraged by Chaplain Bill Rudge, Dr. BJ Rudge, and Pastor Jim Weikal.

“Fixing our eyes on Jesus” was the theme of the conference held Saturday, May 22nd. The conference concluded following lunch with a Q and A session with Bill and BJ.

One comment sums up the conference: “This was an awesome time to get together with strong Christian men and fellowship with Christian brothers.”

I want to thank Bill Rudge Ministries for making the conference such an inspiring event for the men and a sweet aroma to our God and savior Jesus Christ.

Army War College ...

Bill and Karen were blessed to spend some time with Colonel Mastriano and his wife Rebbie and son Josiah a few months ago at the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. While there Bill had an opportunity to experience the extensive obstacle course at the U.S. Army Heritage Center and then was given a personally guided tour of Gettysburg by Colonel Mastriano who is a historian.

Bill and Karen returned to Carlisle last month to attend Colonel Mastriano’s graduation from the U.S. Army War College. It was an awesome event and they were honored to attend. During the elaborate ceremony consisting of 350 graduating Colonels and Lt. Colonels, which included senior officers from some 50 nations, Colonel Mastriano was presented a prestigious award for his research and paper on “The Last Battle of the Argonne: Archeological Research and the Authenticity of Sergeant Alvin York’s Heroic Deed.” (Colonel Mastriano is an expert on WWI hero Sgt. Alvin York. You can learn more about the amazing feats God did through Alvin York at sgtyorkdiscovery.com or billrudge.org under “Military Ministry.”)
